Darts Chosen Around Your Throw

Choosing darts becomes simpler when you separate the features that matter to you. Start with the board you play on, then compare how the barrel feels in your hand, where your fingers sit and the weight you prefer. A player name, colour or material percentage cannot make that decision on its own. Perth Dart Centre’s darts category is a place to explore options and build a shortlist that reflects your playing habits rather than someone else’s equipment choices.

Match the dart to the board

Check the intended tip type before comparing barrel styles. Steel-tip and soft-tip equipment have different uses, and specialist point systems may have their own replacement requirements. Read the exact product specification and the board manufacturer’s guidance. If you already own a set, note its model name so you can make a more accurate comparison with the alternatives.

For a first setup, choose the board and dart type together. Browse dart boards alongside the darts category, and ask about any uncertainty before ordering parts that may belong to a different system.

Compare shape and finger position

Look at the complete barrel profile, not just a close-up of its machining. A straight barrel offers a different shape from a tapered or rounded design. Notice where your fingers naturally rest and whether the grip texture covers that area. The transition between barrel and point can matter to players who place a finger near the front.

When comparing two sets, write down what feels different: the location of the grip, the width under your fingers, or the ease of finding the same position. Describing a specific preference is more useful than searching for a universally perfect dart.

YOUR EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST

Treat weight and material as separate choices

Weight is one part of the overall feel. Barrel length, diameter and weight distribution also contribute to the experience. Compare the stated measurements for the exact weight option, because different versions of a model can have different dimensions. Check what the manufacturer includes in the quoted weight when comparing products with different tip systems.

Tungsten darts can offer a slimmer barrel at a comparable weight because of their material density. Brass darts are another option, often considered for accessible first sets or casual use. Neither material selects the right shape or weight for you.

Understand the complete assembly

The barrel works with the shaft and flight as a complete dart. Before changing accessories, record the supplied configuration so you have a clear starting point. Check the shaft thread and any proprietary fitting, and use the written package contents to establish what is supplied. A photograph may show more than one version or an accessory used for styling.

  • Barrel: compare shape, grip location, length and diameter.
  • Weight: check the selected version and stated measurement basis.
  • Shaft: record length, material and fitting system.
  • Flight: identify shape and whether it folds or is moulded.

Make changes you can evaluate

If you are replacing a set, begin with the reason for the change. You may want a different grip position, a less crowded feel in the fingers or a replacement for worn equipment. Keep the useful features of the current setup in your comparison. Changing several variables at once makes it harder to understand which difference you actually prefer.

Browse compatible flights and shafts when you are ready to assess the full assembly. For product questions, contact Perth Dart Centre with your current model, preferred weight and the issue you are trying to address.

Darts buying questions

What weight should a beginner choose?

There is no single weight that suits every beginner. Compare a manageable shortlist and consider how the whole dart feels. Avoid assuming a professional player’s specification will match your hand or throwing preferences.

Do I need the highest tungsten percentage?

No. Consider actual barrel dimensions, grip and price alongside the material specification. A higher percentage is not a guarantee of accuracy, and a comfortably shaped dart may be more useful to you than a number on the packaging.

Should I replace everything when trying new darts?

Not automatically. Review what comes with the new set and what fits it. Retain a record of your usual setup, then evaluate changes deliberately so you can identify the combinations that suit you.
