Dartboard Surrounds for Your Home Playing Area

A dartboard surround creates an additional catching area around the board and gives the setup a more finished appearance. It is a practical accessory to consider when planning a home playing area, whether you are starting with a new board or improving the equipment you already have.

The best choice begins with compatibility. Compare the surround’s stated board fit, material, outer size and construction, then check how it will sit with any light, cabinet or scoring hardware. A colour match is useful, but a combination that fits properly matters first.

Match the surround to the actual board

Know the model of the board you are buying for. Read the surround manufacturer’s compatibility description rather than assuming every product labelled standard has the same fit. The board’s outer dimensions and the surround’s inner opening need to work together as intended.

Also check how the surround is fitted. Some designs rely on their fit around the board; others have their own assembly or mounting requirements. Follow the instructions for the selected product and avoid forcing a tight or awkward fit. If you are changing the board as well, compare dart boards and surrounds as a pair.

YOUR EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST

Understand what the surround covers

A surround occupies a defined area around the board. It is intended to help catch some darts that miss the scoring surface, but it does not cover the whole wall or make a room immune to damage. Check the actual outer dimensions and consider the space beyond its edges.

Choose the playing position with the whole room in mind. Keep people clear of the throw direction and consider nearby doors, windows and furniture. A surround complements a suitable layout; it does not replace one. The dart board mounting guide can help you review the board position before adding accessories.

Compare materials and construction honestly

Look at the manufacturer’s description of the material and how the surround is made. One-piece and sectional designs can have different assembly and storage considerations. A close-up photograph can help show the surface finish, but it cannot establish every performance characteristic.

Keep protection and durability claims tied to the exact model. Do not assume that a similar-looking surround will behave identically or that a particular material will prevent every mark. Think about your priorities: a fixed home display, a setup that is regularly packed away or a specific size limitation on the wall.

Leave room for lighting and other equipment

A surround shares space with the board’s number ring, mounting arrangement and any accessories around the edge. If you use a light, check the manufacturer’s guidance for that specific combination. Some systems have designated clearance or profile requirements, so the thickness and shape of the surround may matter.

Browse dartboard lights with your current surround details to hand. A cabinet can add further constraints, and there may not be space for the combination you have in mind. Confirm the board, surround and light together rather than treating them as three independent purchases.

Choose a finish that keeps the board readable

Colour and branding can help the setup suit the room. Think about the contrast around the board and how the surround will look with your wall, lighting and other equipment. If the room already has strong visual detail, a simpler finish may let the board remain the focus.

For a coordinated home setup, also consider the dart mat and scoring area. There is no need for every part to carry matching graphics, but the layout should feel clear when you are playing. Ask Perth Dart Centre about surround fit with the model names of the products you want to combine.

Dartboard surround questions

Will a surround protect the entire wall?

No. It covers only its own area and should not be treated as a guarantee against all damage. Review the size, the product’s stated purpose and the surrounding room layout. Darts can miss outside the surround’s footprint.

Can I use a surround and a light together?

Many setups use both, but compatibility depends on the specific products. Check how the light attaches and whether the surround’s shape leaves the required clearance. Ask about the exact models if the published information is incomplete.

Should I buy the same brand as my board?

Brand can be a starting point, but the product’s stated compatibility is the deciding factor. Not every item from one brand is necessarily intended for every other item it makes. Check the board model and the surround’s fitting guidance.
