Dart Mats for a Well-Planned Throwing Area

A dart mat gives the playing lane a clear place in the room. It can help organise a home setup, make a throw reference easier to identify and provide a surface designed for the darts area. The right choice depends on the floor, the available space and whether the mat stays out between games.

Start with the actual product dimensions and features. A printed line, a separate oche and an integrated raised oche are different arrangements. Compare the model’s stated purpose before deciding what you need, and measure your room before ordering.

Choose for the floor beneath the mat

A mat’s behaviour depends partly on the surface underneath it. Read the product guidance for its intended floor types, backing and care requirements. A photograph of a mat on timber flooring does not confirm its suitability for every finish, and a mat that feels stable on one surface may behave differently on another.

Look for a flat, clean area where the mat can sit without bunching or catching on furniture. Consider doors and normal walking routes as well as the throwing position. The aim is a clear playing lane with an orderly approach to the board, not an obstacle that people need to step around during a game.

YOUR EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST

Understand the throw-line feature

Some dart mats have printed references; others include a physical oche, the raised edge behind which a player stands. Check which features are part of the exact product. A printed line provides a visual reference, while a raised oche also gives a physical boundary for foot position.

Neither feature removes the need to position the mat correctly. Use the dart board mounting guide to establish the appropriate setup measurements from the installed board. Do not place a mat against the wall and assume every printed mark will automatically fall in the right position.

Measure the footprint, then allow for movement

Compare both the mat’s length and width with the room. Include space behind the throwing position and think about how players will walk forward to retrieve darts. If the mat has a raised component, check how that affects the room when the game is finished.

For a setup that is put away after each session, consider the stated storage method and the space you have available. A mat should be stored according to its instructions rather than tightly folded simply because that fits a cupboard. Ease of packing away can matter as much as appearance in a shared room.

Set realistic expectations about coverage

A mat covers only its own footprint. Darts can fall or rebound outside that area, so the presence of a mat does not guarantee complete protection for the room or the floor. Check any protection claims against the exact product and avoid treating thickness alone as proof of performance.

Think about the playing area as a whole. A suitable dartboard surround addresses the board perimeter, while a mat belongs on the floor. These accessories have different roles. Keep the surrounding area clear and review where missed darts could go before settling on the layout.

Make a repeatable setup routine

Once the board and mat are positioned, check the throw reference before play. Recheck it whenever the mat is moved, the board is remounted or a dart cabinet changes the board’s position. A convenient reference is useful only when it remains in the correct place.

Follow the supplied cleaning and storage instructions, and inspect the mat for curling edges or movement on the floor. Stop and reposition equipment if the playing area becomes awkward. For product questions, ask Perth Dart Centre about dart mats with your floor type, available space and whether you need to pack the setup away.

Dart mat questions

Does a mat automatically give me the correct throwing distance?

No. The mat must be positioned correctly in relation to the board face, using the relevant setup measurements. Printed references are useful once that relationship is checked. Measure again after moving the mat or changing the board’s mounting position.

Is a thicker mat always the better choice?

Thickness is only one detail. Floor suitability, overall size, backing, edge behaviour and storage requirements also affect the choice. Compare the manufacturer’s stated purpose and features rather than ranking every mat by a single measurement.

Can I use a mat in a room that serves other purposes?

Yes, if the available space and the product’s intended use suit your arrangement. Plan where it will sit during play and how it will be stored afterwards. Keep normal walkways clear and check the throw reference every time the setup is moved.
