Dart Shafts and Replacement Stems

Dart shafts connect your barrels to your flights, so the right replacement needs to match more than a colour. Length, thread, construction and the way the flight is held all matter when comparing products. Whether you call them shafts or stems, start by identifying the parts on your current darts. This guide helps you choose a replacement or make a deliberate setup change without buying by appearance alone.

Replace like for like or change one detail

First decide what you want from the purchase. Replacing a broken shaft is a different task from experimenting with a new setup. For a replacement, record the manufacturer, model, length description and thread. If one shaft has broken, compare the remaining intact shafts rather than trying to measure damaged pieces. Packaging or an earlier order record can help identify the exact model.

If you are experimenting, give the change a purpose. You might want to compare lengths, try a different flight attachment or explore another material. Keep a note of your existing setup so it remains an available reference. Buying several unrelated systems together can make the next step less clear.

Read length descriptions carefully

Names such as short, intermediate and medium help organise a range, but they are not a universal measurement system. Compare the manufacturer’s stated length and how it is measured. Some descriptions exclude the thread, and integrated systems may describe only the shaft portion. Two products with a similar name can therefore produce a different assembled dart.

When comparing shaft lengths, keep your barrels and flight model unchanged initially. Measure only for identification; do not assume that a particular number guarantees a particular entry angle. The complete dart and your release work together. A clear record of the exact parts is more useful than a rule saying one length suits everyone.

YOUR EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST

Explore material and construction options

Browse alloy shafts when you want to compare metal constructions, and nylon shafts for nylon options. Within each category, inspect the actual design: the flight slot, body profile and any separate top or retaining component. Material is only one feature, and hybrid products can combine different materials in one shaft.

Consider how you maintain your equipment as well as how it feels. A replaceable top, an integrated flight or a conventional slotted shaft can lead to different spare-part needs. Check which components are supplied and which must be purchased separately. Do not treat a product photograph containing accessories as a complete contents list.

Confirm both ends fit

The barrel connection and flight connection are separate checks. Confirm the shaft thread against the barrel specification and start the thread gently by hand. A part that resists or sits incorrectly needs checking; force is not a solution to an uncertain fit. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for tightening and any recommended fittings.

At the other end, establish whether the shaft accepts ordinary folding flights or belongs to a dedicated system. Rings and caps are not automatically interchangeable between designs. Compare your chosen shaft with the relevant dart flights before ordering, especially when replacing only one part of an existing system.

Keep your darts consistent and ready

Fit matching shafts to all three darts when assessing a new setup. Check that each flight is seated properly and each connection is secure. After a fall or collision, look for damage, a distorted top or an alignment change. Replacing a visibly compromised component gives you a better basis for practice than adjusting your throw around it.

Carry a clearly labelled spare set of your preferred model and length. A dart case with separate compartments makes small parts easier to identify. For a compatibility question, contact Perth Dart Centre with your barrel model and photos of the current shaft. You can also browse the shop to plan the rest of your equipment together.

Frequently asked questions

Are shafts and stems the same part?

In ordinary darts shopping, both terms refer to the component between the barrel and flight. The product specification still matters: a familiar label does not establish thread compatibility, measured length or the type of flight attachment.

Should I change shafts and flights at the same time?

If an integrated system requires it, both are replaced together. For separate components, changing one variable first makes comparison easier. Keep the previous combination available and assess the change over more than one session.
